ELLIPSE LAMPSHADES

The lampshades began almost by accident, when David needed pendant lights for his own kitchen and started experimenting with card and veneers. Early cardboard cones felt too heavy, but a thinner card transformed the light, giving it a softer, more translucent quality.

Inspired by photographic lamps, photofloods, chicken shed lights and his fondness for round tables, the design developed around the idea of light diffusing sideways rather than shining directly down. The popper fixing began as a practical solution, but became part of the character of the shade itself: simple, honest and decorative.

After many variations and refinements, the final conical form felt right. It focuses light beautifully over a table, while the overlapping layers of card subtly alter the translucency, creating warmth, softness and a delicate pattern through the material.
