Ellipse Lampshades

from £22.00

The lampshades began almost by accident, when David needed pendant lights for his own kitchen and started experimenting with card. Early cardboard cones felt too heavy, but thinner card transformed the quality of the light, giving it a soft translucency.

Influenced by photographic lamps, photofloods and traditional chicken shed lights, the design evolved towards a conical form that diffuses light sideways as well as downwards, creating a warmer, more atmospheric glow.

The fixing became part of the design. Rather than hiding the join with glue, David used poppers — simple, honest and decorative. After many tests and refinements, the final version combines practical construction with a subtle beauty: overlapping layers of card alter the translucency, creating a gentle pattern as the light passes through.

Simple, effective and deeply satisfying to make.
